How to Use This Course

Every Arabic verb belongs to one of ten measures (awzān). Measure I is the root form — it has several sub-variations, all shown below. Measures II–X each add a predictable layer of meaning to the root. Click any card to explore its conjugation pattern, full vocabulary list, and Qur'ānic examples.

Measures I – X

Measure I — Variations

Measure I is the least regular measure. These five variation groups within Measure I each have a different gerund/verbal noun pattern.

Irregular Verbs — الأفعال الشاذة

Some Measure I verbs come from roots that produce irregular verbal patterns that are difficult to derive by rule. These five categories must be learned by heart. Only the most commonly used Qur'ānic forms are listed.
