Dua on Waking Up: Alhamdulillahilladhi Afani Fi Jasadi

Every morning we receive countless blessings from Allah, many of which we rarely stop to notice. We wake up, breathe, move our bodies, see the world around us, and have another opportunity to remember and worship our Creator. This short but meaningful dua teaches us to begin the day with gratitude.

English Translation

Praise is to Allah Who gave strength to my body and returned my soul to me and permitted me to remember Him.

Understanding the Dua

The dua begins with โ€œAlhamdulillah,โ€ meaning all praise belongs to Allah. This is a beautiful way to start the day because gratitude changes the way we look at our circumstances. Rather than beginning the morning by focusing on worries, responsibilities, or problems, we first recognize the blessings that Allah has already given us.

The words โ€œWho gave strength to my bodyโ€ remind us that good health and physical ability are blessings. Being able to stand, walk, see, hear, speak, breathe, and use our hands is not something we should take for granted. A believer learns to recognize these ordinary blessings and thank Allah for them.

The dua also says that Allah returned the soul to us. Sleep resembles a temporary interruption of our normal awareness, and waking reminds us of Allah's complete control over life and death. This should make the believer humble and grateful for another day.

Finally, we ask Allah to remember that He permitted us to remember Him. Even the ability to perform dhikr is a blessing from Allah. We do not remember Allah because we are independent of Him; we remember Him because He gives us the ability and opportunity to do so.

How to Use This Dua

Recite this supplication soon after waking and try to understand each phrase. Parents can also teach it to children as one of the first morning duas they learn. Its short length makes it easy to memorize, while its meaning teaches gratitude, awareness of Allah's blessings, and love for dhikr.

You can make this dua part of a simple morning routine: wake up, praise Allah, recite your waking duas, and begin the day with the intention of obeying Him and doing good.

Hadith Reference

This dua is included in Hisn al-Muslim, Hadith 3, and is referenced to At-Tirmidhi 5/473 and Al-Albani's Sahih Tirmidhi 3/144.

May Allah grant us healthy bodies, grateful hearts, and tongues that remain moist with His remembrance throughout every day.
